Asphalt Bio-based Products – Miscancell Lignin

Lignin is a bio-based based part replacement for bitumen in asphalt, a Natural Asphalt Binder (NABi). Lignin has been proven to improve bitumen's stiffness, rutting resistance and aging resistance. Lignin can contribute significantly towards reducing the carbon footprint of road surfaces. Profiled case studies demonstrate successful applications using NABi for major infrastructure projects including arterial roads, intersections and to develop a roading network for an industrial park.

Miscancell Lignin case studies

  • Roundabout, and roading Infrastructure for H20 Business Park -NABi, Municipality Assen and Hatten, Netherlands

NABi (Natural Asphalt Binder) has been used for two major projects a roundabout in the city of Assen and for over 10 square kilometres of roading infrastructure for the H20 Business Park in Hatten. These projects demonstrate that the use of lignin, NABi binder is not an ‘experimental’ solution for major infrastructure, it is increasingly becoming a mainstream requirement for projects where both a sustainable and a high-performance asphalt is required.

  • Revitalisation of access roads - NABi, Municipality Arnhem, Netherlands

NABi (Natural Asphalt Binder)has provided a sustainable solution for the revitalisation of access roads into an industrial area adjacent to the Rhine, in the Arnhem district of Netherlands. This case study is significant as it profiles a large laydown of 30,500m2 of asphalt using a Natural Asphalt Binder (NABi), a 100% bio-based product. An international attestation to the success of NABi as an enabler of sustainable high-performance pavements.
